Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is that specialty which diagnoses and treats diseases, deformities, injuries and cosmetic defects in the facial and oral region. Before entering private practice, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete a minimum of four years full-time training in a hospital-based residency. This may be followed by a fellowship with concentration in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. All residents are required to complete a core surgical/medical year prior to completion of the residency. The credential of board certification means that the surgeon has passed the national standardized examination by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
